<text>Diary of Daniel Gookin, Harvard Colledge Fellow, Tutor, and Librarian
Cambridge, Massachusetts Bay Colony
July 6, 1676

It has been an especially boggy July this year. Indeed, as I made my way up and down the creaking steps of the Old Colledge today, to and from the second-floor library, I felt my eyes sting from streams of sweat falling from my brow. Howbeit, today was a momentous day: as the New Colledge building nears completion, the overseers of the colledge hath paid me 4s 6d to move the library’s book collection from the decrepit Old Colledge building into the nearly completed New Colledge. What a shame it is—the Old Colledge that is—an edifice no more than 8 years my senior, falling apart before my very eyes. What a glorious sight it must have been at its infancy: a shining beacon of light amidst the dark, untamed wilderness—a true testament of the human spirit. My work today was not without its peril. The Old Colledge, a miserable monstrosity of rotting timber, is a peril in itself, as it continues to sink into the miry ground upon the immense weight of the red-tiled roof. Today, upon exiting the front entrance of the wretched building, in my arms a stack of books once belonging to the colledge namesake, I made my way across the front lawn, towards the New Colledge, when a most peculiar noise rumbled above me. Looking up, I saw a loose red tile tumbling down from the edge of the roof, in my very direction. Acting quickly, I jumped back, missing the tile by less than half a foot! The tile struck the earth with a thud, the impact splitting the tile in two, with the larger piece landing somewhere among the tall blades of grass. Had I not kept my wits about me and had the Lord not spared me, one can only imagine the kind of lesion I may have sustained.</text>

<text>The humble Cambridge mudstone... At first glance, there is nothing shiny, special, or eye-catching about the rock. No, its color doesn’t beg for your attention like a brick might, nor does a specialist need to birth it like glass or ceramic requires. But if one ignores this seemingly dull appearance to recognize its importance in the early architecture of Harvard Yard, it is obvious that Cambridge mudstone has earned a title in the hall of fame of building material.

Though Cambridge mudstone is the colloquial name, geologists know it better argillite. This is a sedimentary rock that forms when enough pressure is applied to its parent rock of mudstone or shale (USGS). Cambridge’s argillite formed millions of years ago as sands, silts, and clays settled to the bottom of the ocean floor to be solidified into the rock we know today, and it consequently forms one part of the Boston Bay geologic group (Holton and Newman 2006). In other words, argillite or Cambridge mudstone is just one type of rock that comprises the greater Boston area.

Thankfully, Cambridge isn’t underwater anymore, and its geology was exploited by all its inhabitants. While bricks and rooftiles are common architectural materials observable from the exterior of buildings, Cambridge mudstone played a crucial role in the interior of Harvard’s first building- the Old College constructed in 1638; this stone was used as construction material for the foundation of the Old College and was vital for its structural integrity. Unfortunately, its use did not help the longevity of the building as the Old College began to disintegrate just three years later and it was eventually the university abandoned its carcass for it to return to the earth (Stubbs 1992). Subsequent buildings lacked Cambridge mudstone and instead used clay underpinnings. Thankfully, the hearty and sturdy nature of rocks means that Cambridge mudstone can be enjoyed to this day, even if we know not to use it as foundational material!

<text>“A bone?” calls one of my classmates. “A human bone?” Thankfully, the bone I’m holding did not belong to a person–there’d be a lot of red tape if it had, not to mention the trauma of finding a human body less than a meter underneath the ground near a building I’d lived in only 3 years earlier. No, Aurora, the HYAP 2021 Teaching Fellow, says: this is a fragment of a domesticated animal’s longbone, probably that of a cow or a pig. Since we found it in a layer of soil that has been virtually untouched since the 17th century, it's a safe bet that the animal the bone belonged to died nearly 400 years ago.

Unfortunately, while we have a general idea of what type of animal this bone may have belonged to and when it died, we have no way to tell how old it was at the time (at least, not while we're in the field). There are 2 main ways we could have figured this out, both of which are off the table:

1) If we had the animal’s jawbone instead of a longbone, we could have looked at how worn down its teeth were from grinding up plants throughout its life. The older the animal, the more wear and tear (Bowen 140).

2) If we had an end of the bone instead of the middle, we would have been able to look at the epiphyses (the ends of longbones like the femur). Epiphyses become attached to longbones in a predictable pattern throughout an animal’s development cycle, and so are useful in telling the age of the animal a bone belonged to (Bowen 140).

The cause of death of the animal is also a little shaky. Disease was not very common in European livestock in the early colonial period. Yes, the Columbian Exchange was terrible for human health; New World and Old World diseases spread through Indigenous and colonial communities like wildfire (Nunn and Quian 164). Animals like pigs and cows, however, were now separated from Old World diseases by an ocean and had no New World relatives from which to contract diseases (Smithcors 172). The first recorded large-scale epizootic (animal epidemic) in the colonies did not occur until 1699–the very tail end of the century this bone probably came from (Smithcors 172). That said, it is still likely that this animal died of natural causes, perhaps an isolated illness or simply old age. How can we tell? Butchering marks, the telltale signs that an animal has been killed for its meat, are entirely absent.
